Joe is a massively diverse IP with all manner of distinct characters with different abilities, costumes and personalities - essentially rivaling Marvel or DC in its creative possibilities. The biggest problem is that the studio doesn't seem to know the potential hit it has on its hands, and continues to water down and siphon the narrative through a different lead actor every time, losing sight of the overall appeal. Joe franchise since the studio acquired it, and continue to make the same mistakes with each new entry. Paramount has struggled to come up with a true hit with the G.I. The actor has dabbled in rom-coms, like Crazy Rich Asians and action thrillers, like The Gentlemen, but it's unclear which direction he'll choose from here. Golding seems to be taking a step back from the action genre, as he's next slated to star in an adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion. Much of the film's potential success was placed on actor Henry Golding's shoulders, but the failure of the film shouldn't affect him too much. However, given the budget, marketing and star power, as well as franchise awareness, Snake Eyes should have done much better.
The pandemic caused the movie to be delayed, which could account for some of the disappointing box office numbers. Beyond that, the rampant use of shaky cam to "enhance" the film's action sequences show how woefully misused the style is, especially given the expert fight choreographers the studio hired for the film. Of particular note is how the three main tests Snake Eyes must pass all involve no martial arts whatsoever, but instead only minimal physical ability.
In the latest Screen Junkies Honest Trailer, the absurdity, shaky cam and easy-to-pass "ninja school" are highlighted, as well as the many narrative blunders and tropes that helped sink Snake Eyes at the box office.
Joe's Movie Mistake: It Should've Been A TV Show Snake Eyes suffered on the critical front as well as the box office, earning a 36 percent critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, balanced slightly by a stronger audience score of 75 percent.
Directed by RIPD and Red director Robert Schwentke, Snake Eyes co-stars Andrew Koji, Haruka Abe, Iko Uwais, Úrsula Corberó as The Baroness, and Samara Weaving as Scarlet. The film sees Golding take on the famed character, although he doesn't don the iconic costume or character name until the very end of the film. However, it failed at the box office over the summer, pulling in a paltry $36 million with an $88 million budget.
